What about Wellness?

Wellness is an important and relevant topic for believers. Often though, some find it confusing. Why should I be concerned with wellness, some ask, why not just trust in God? Thus, the question has become: is a focus on wellness a lack of trust in God for healing? A short answer is, absolutely not! In 1 Timothy 4:8, Paul declares,

8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

So we see that while godliness is hugely important, physical training or exercise is of some value at least. Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, designed to be fueled by a healthy diet and maintained by appropriate activity and exercise. God made Adam and then,

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Notice his assignment wasn’t to lounge on the couch all day, but to be active working the land. In Proverbs 23:20-21 also, there is advice about diet,

20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, 21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

So we see that diet and exercise are important for us. ln addition, so are regular medical check ups. Go ahead and benefit from medical knowledge, just as you benefit from driving your car or any other amenities of this modern world.

Let’s reason this one out for a minute. Even assuming you are adamant about biblical healing for every ailment, you can still benefit from the diagnostic capabilities of modern medicine. So use them! Especially since you do not have X-Ray or MRI eyes yet. You will then be better informed about how to pray for your healing. If you need more encouragement, Luke-the author of the books of Luke and Acts, was a doctor.

What would you say about mental illness, such as bipolar – and seeking medication?

Ive been bipolar since birth and have been on meds all my life and by experience know the awful side effects from head meds. 2 years ago I completely went off all medication and endured much pain from the side effects and almost died. But, I got through it all with Christ. I lost allot of weight and regained a better life and a clear bill of health through blood tests and a physical, recently.
Physically I’m fine, mentally I’m not. It didn’t matter if I was off medications or all the combination s of medications for 25 years, it was still there tormenting me. I remember accepting Christ as a child as it was yesterday and even through this severe illness of the mind I always loved God with all the heart I believe I have. I’m still seeking to be healed but it is very difficult with the way my mind is. Ive felt despair and Ive felt as God in mania yet, I know it’s truly not me.
Right now I’m thinking about trying medication again, hoping to obtain a good doctor and a clearer mind so that I might be able to concentrate more on God’s Healing than the defects and torment my mind gives me always pulling me away into a mixed episode of despair and mania. I know these medications only treat the symptoms and I crave total healing – this is one of the reason’s I went off them in the first place.
I really don’t have any support and have done everything myself, and it’s so very hard.
This is a question and a request for help…
    Thankyou

    Hi James,

I’m sorry to hear about your challenges with the bipolar disorder. I’m sure it has not been a happy experience and I deeply sympathize.

However, God is able to bring relief to every condition. In the case of bipolar disorders there may be a mix of both deliverance and healing required. It is difficult to tell without ministering to you myself.

Could you tell me what state you live in? Hopefully, you live in a state where there are competent ministers close by who I could recommend to you.

In any case, I look forward to your response and will also be praying for you. God is bigger than the disorder.

    Blessings to you.

    Dear James,

I have worked in a Healing Room for a few years and feel comfortable with them, as they are trained. However, I cannot vouch for them all.

There are a few in your area, but if you visit, go with a friend who will support you and stay with you throughout the period of ministry.

Here are a couple of Healing Room URLs close to you:
    1. http://healingrooms.com/index.php?src=local&l=US1514

    2. http://healingrooms.com/index.php?src=local&l=US1545

If you are ever in California, I recommend Bill Johnson’s church, at http://www.ibethel.org for ministry.

We will continue to pray for you here. Let me know how things progress.

    Blessings to you…
